About MRI Scan

MRI is the abbreviated form for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It is an advanced non-invasive imaging technique done to detect and diagnose various abnormalities in your body.

As the name itself suggests Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI scan uses strong electromagnetic pulses to examine the images of the internal parts of your body. It is capable of detecting abnormalities in the internal organs such as the kidney, liver, brain, spinal cord, joints, chest, lungs, etc.

There are no special preparations required before an MRI scan, you continue with your regular habits. But, sometimes a contrast material will be used to get a clear picture of the abnormality. In that case, you should fast for at least 12 hours before the procedure. The contrast dye will be given either orally or will be injected into the vein.

You should remove all the objects with metallic contents before entering the MRI scan room. You may also be asked to change into a gown provided by the lab.

The machine has a sliding horizontal table, you will be asked to lay down flat on a table. Once you are inside the magnets in the machine will start rotating around the body part that is being diagnosed. This will create a strong electromagnetic field and these signals will be picked up and sent to a special computer to process into an image.

A radiologist will be scrutinizing the entire scanning process from a nearby control room with the help of a microphone and speakers. Usually, it will take up to 90 minutes to complete the entire procedure depending on your study.

An MRI scan is generally safe compared to other imaging techniques that use radiation. But, the MRI scan has its own limitations. People who had heart surgery or any kind of metallic implants such as artificial heart valves, clips, plates, etc are restricted from taking an MRI Scan.

Prerequisites For MRI Scan

The following are the prerequisites for an MRI scan if the contrast dye is used in the procedure.

  • Minimum 4 hrs fasting required before the scan.
  • If you have any latest Blood Urea and Creatinine test report, it is advisable to take it with you.
  • In case of any previous medical reports or scans, reports take those reports to the lab.
